Cal Poly Market Demand Study

Walker Consultants prepared a market demand study for California Polytechnic University to improve the effectiveness and customer service of its parking system.

Walker’s study complemented campus master plan priorities for access and mobility, while maintaining sensitivity to the local campus and community contexts. It sought to assess the existing alternative transportation options, participation, and recommend enhancements to transportation demand management (TDM) programs.

Through fieldwork, community outreach, stakeholder meetings, and distribution of an online survey to all Cal Poly faculty, staff, and students, Walker was able to analyze existing parking conditions and project parking supply and demand through the next decade.

Walker’s recommendations included:

• Expansion of Cal Poly’s use of systems and technology to enable the University to spend less time on parking enforcement and more time focusing on customer service 
• Managing parking allocations and limiting privileges more closely to reduce searching and traffic congestion 
• Development and implementation of a proactive program for maintenance of parking assets
