Historic Windmill Restoration

LOCATION

Highlands Ranch, Colorado

This Historic Windmill has been a landmark in Highlands Ranch, Colorado for more than 100 years. After a strong wind storm toppled the windmill blade, the Metro District called Walker Consultants to assess the extent of damages to the windmill structure both from the wind storm and from exposure to the elements over the years, and to design repairs to the structure. Walker performed a detailed assessment of the overall structure including the stone silo encapsulating the wood structure supporting the windmill fan blades and the shed structure.

Damaged Highlands Ranch Windmill

The stone silo structure was found to be in generally good condition for its age, but the wood support structure for the windmill blade had experienced significant damage. Additionally, the wood platform, windows and door in the silo and the shed structure had experienced significant deterioration over the years.

Working in conjunction with the Highlands Ranch Public Works team, Walker developed repair documents to restore the structure, including providing enhanced support for the windmill blade and future wind events.

The project was started in November 2016 and the restoration was completed in May 2017. Walker is proud to have been selected by Highlands Ranch for the restoration of the iconic structure.
