Comment on The Dos and Don’ts of Specifying Expansion Joints in a Structure by Ted O'Shea https://walkerconsultants.com/blog/2015/11/30/the-dos-and-donts-of-specifying-expansion-joints-in-buildings/#comment-21 Mon, 04 Apr 2016 17:34:52 +0000 http://www.walkerparking.com/?p=5441#comment-21 Carl,

Excellent article, particularly with explaining the need to have shear walls away from the corners. Many professionals are training to have shear walls at the corners of the building (heated structures). The helps highlight the need to allow movement, keep the shear walls away from the corners.

I remember my books talking about how when the early railroads were being built, they didn’t account for thermal expansion and it ended up damaging a lot of rail lines. It sounds like having a professional structural engineer is essential to help design for the expected movement in structures that will happen with the change in seasons and temperature. Thanks for your article. I’ll keep that in mind if I ever need to build.

Many good points. I would also recognize the importance of qualifying the contractors skill and expertise through their documentable participation in a Factory Trained Applicator program. This will assist and assure the owner that his contractor is a skilled craftsman capable of executing and warranting his work delivery.
