Parking & Transportation Analysis
LOCATION
Miami, Florida
SCOPE
- Parking operations
- System structure
- Transportation alternatives
- Technological enhancements
POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS
- Simplify permit process
- Distribute parking demand
- Improve user experience
- Support alternate mobility options
The University of Miami engaged Walker Consultants to conduct a parking and transportation analysis. The University was experiencing a strain on parking availability due to development and growth in enrollment.
Walker helped the University gain a comprehensive grasp of parking operational approaches, set clear objectives, and harmonize both current and future strategies with these goals. This strategic alignment enables the University to make the most of technology and optimize its operations using industry-leading methodologies.
Making the Most of Existing Assets
The goal was to identify policy and operational enhancements that would make the most of the University’s existing resources before considering investment in new technology or infrastructure.
Walker began by conducting thorough consultations with university stakeholders. We wanted to explore mobility challenges beyond parking, so we took a holistic look at how people were moving around campus. We considered the University’s current efforts, highlighting effective practices as well as areas for improvement.
Comprehensive, Practical Recommendations
Walker presented the University with a thorough examination of parking operations, system structure, transportation alternatives, and technological enhancements. Our policy and management recommendations included improvements to the permit process and enhancements to programs that support commuting options. These were designed to more evenly distribute parking demand and improve the user experience.
Our recommendations were delivered in a playbook that listed them in priority order and included timetables for implementation. This let the University take immediate action, as well as create short- and long-term plans.
With Walker’s parking and transportation analysis, the University of Miami has the tools it needs to improve the parking and mobility experience for its community. Critically, Walker’s plan lets the University handle the growth in enrollment by making the most of its existing assets, instead of needing to immediately invest in additional parking infrastructure.
